1991 Toyota Camry Automatic 4 Cyl. Transmission Slips

05/26/2010 4:02 PM

I purchased this car about 2 1/2 years ago from my mother-in-law who doesn't drive. The car sat in the garage for 6 years since my father-in-law passed away. When I bought it, the car had only 20,000 miles (not a typo). I replaced all of the tires, new car battery, and changed all of the fluids (radiator, brake, oil, and transmission). About a week ago, I drove about 10 miles and at the stop light, the transmission slipped. The car wouldn't move while it was on Drive. I changed the gears and nothing happened. I turned off the engine and restarted the car and was able to drive about a mile and it happened again. It happened several times. Someone told me to check the transmission fluid and it was low and I've added about a quart and a half. Before I added the transmission fluid, I started the car and while in park, I noticed that the "Reverse" gear is noisy (clicking and clacking noises) and the car would not go in reverse. After putting in the transmission fluid, the noise stopped and the reverse gear worked fine. I thought the problem was fixed. Then, yesterday, I drove only 5 miles and the transmission slipped again. Any thoughts on what the problem is? Do I really need to replace the transmission with only 35,000 miles on it or change the transmission fluid "and" replace the pan gasket and filter? Thanks for your suggestions

It is not a suggestion, but just a mentioning of my Camry 1991 that, in 1995, had the same problem. It is possible that was the first model with electronic control of the transmission. I admit, I am the one who made the mistake. It was my first automatic car (presently, I still have manual drive) and, I did remember to change the transmission oil at 50,000 miles. It had the same behaviour and it did cost (in 1995) $1500 at Mr. Transmission. Within one month I took the car, back, two times. I sold the Camry and the lady who bought it came to me after few weeks. Luckily the car was under warranty. Otherwise, when the transmission was functional, it was a pleasure to drive it.

BTW, Camry 1991 and Lexus 1991 were absolutely the same (V6 was standard on Lexus, as well as leather seats).

thanks for your comments. i'm afraid to put too much money into this car if i have the same issue as yours. someone suggested replacing the transmission fluid/filter/pan gasket. cost is about $175. i'm getting quotes of $1200 to $2500 to replace the tranny. i hope to hear back from others soon. in the meantime, i borrowed a 1990 toyota that has only 67k miles on it. i may buy this one and sell the '91 as a mechanic's special? have a great day!

Sorry I don't anything of your model, but i hope the link below helps.

It's possible the bands that control the gear change have stuck. i would suggest you get the valve block cleaned or possibly replaced.

But i am sure there is someone on here that can help.

Good luck.

It sounds like a similar problem I just fixed on a 1992 Toyota Hiace .

What we did to remedy it was , drained all the fluid . pulled the pan off ,

removed and cleaned the pan filter , then re-installed it - It was full of

soft , gritty trans clutch material. The original equipment fluid was then replaced

with Type F ( Ford ) fluid . This stopped the slipping . Your clutches are wearing down. This is all you can do until , eventually , they are gone , and need replacing .

thanks for the info. i'm aiming towards your suggestions since it's about $175 to do this. if it holds up from the major repair for a year or so, then, it's worth it. i just hate to go through this and it doesn't fix the problem. i've talked to transmission shops and most of them suggest replacing the transmission which ranges from $1200 to $2500. i'll consider your option. take care.
