ASTM Letter Designations

05/27/2010 12:39 PM

Is there some kind of table or chart that covers different letter designations for ASTM materials. I am mainly just looking for one that covers ferrous metals but non ferrous could help as well.

What I am talking about is the letters at the end of a callout. For instance, A516-70N. I've learned through experience that N is for normalized but it would be convenient if anyone could direct me to a table so I can reference that any time I find a new call out.

The latest mystery callout I've found is A234 wpb-AHPT.

I had searched this website before. Unless I'm missing something, the page you linked is a list of award recipients under various categories.

C'mon. lynlynch. Just tell us about your award! You don't have to drive traffic to the announcement webpage. I don't see you as the bashful type.

The only award I'd get here is the award for dumb.

Honest, it looked like what he wanted. Lots of letters and stuff behind them.

Wow OT of 10. OOPS!

I made the same assumption first time I went there. I thought about cheering for joy when I found the site and then again when you sent the link in your response.

Wow, two let downs in one day.

ASTM Letter Designations

Question: What do the letters at the beginning of an ASTM standard signify?

Answer: Every ASTM standard is identified by a unique designation. It includes a capital letter (A – H), followed by a serial number ranging from one to four digits, a dash, and finally the year of issue. For example, a common bolt specification is A449 – 07a, although when specified the standard's year designation is usually not included.

The alphabetical letters represent general classifications. Outlined under each classification are a number of standards for a variety of products, materials, testing processes, and many other topics.

General ASTM Classifications

  1. Ferrous Metals
  2. Nonferrous Metals
  3. Cementitious, Ceramic, Concrete, and Masonry Materials
  4. Miscellaneous Materials
  5. Miscellaneous Subjects
  6. Materials for Specific Applications
  7. Corrosion, Deterioration, and Degradation of Materials
  8. Joint Committee and District Recipients

I don't think this is it either.

Sorry if I'm wasting your time. This shouldn't be that difficult. Used them all the years ago. D series. Plastics, you know.

Cheers.

Yeah, some of the moderators are having a little fun with you, I think.

I visited with a moderator about OT points, and he has started whacking some of my posts that I already voted OT with some big numbers. I think I have one with 100,000 OT votes! I think this is kind of funny, but I wish they would make it a little more obvious. I could see getting 5 OT on top of your own, but how about something like 166 OT? Then you would know.

When I posted here, neither of you had any votes. I marked mine OT.

Come on guy... whack me again! 166 OT! I just checked, and you are trolling around out there!

I find it was member Indel that got the 100,000 OT here. Check the entire thread for some over a million OT.

I have some big ones somewhere... here is one

I'm replying to this thread mainly to hopefully see if there is a concise source for this information.

The FAA has recently started demanding material designations in depth on our engineering drawings and I've wasted beauceau hours chasing specs & stuff. I even bought the US$639 spec called MMPDS-04; Metallic Material Properties Development and Standardization, developed by the FAA. This spec is over 2700 pages of very convoluted, extremely in-depth data about all metallic materials used in aviation. This handbook specifies metal types per AMS spec #'s but it is very difficult to wade through all the charts, graphs and notes to pull out data like you ask for.

There should be a concise table or chart like you ask for somewhere, but I'll be damned if I can find it.

Maybe this will help direct people. At one point, I found a short description of some of these. I can't remember exactly where I found it (maybe ASME B31.3 stress charts), but it had a description of some of the more common lettering. For instance, it showed that N was for normalized, A I believe was annealed, R for as rolled, etc.

I was stupid for not writing down where I found this but I'm sure there are tables out there with the information. I guess when I get frustrated enough I'll just call/email ASTM and ask for it.
