Lest We Forget

05/29/2010 5:39 PM

HEADQUARTERS GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC

Honor those who sacrificed all for our freedom this weekend – that's what this holiday is truly about.

General Orders No.11, WASHINGTON, D.C., May 5, 1868

I. The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.

We are organized, comrades, as our regulations tell us, for the purpose among other things, "of preserving and strengthening those kind and fraternal feelings which have bound together the soldiers, sailors, and marines who united to suppress the late rebellion." What can aid more to assure this result than cherishing tenderly the memory of our heroic dead, who made their breasts a barricade between our country and its foes? Their soldier lives were the reveille of freedom to a race in chains, and their deaths the tattoo of rebellious tyranny in arms. We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders. Let no wanton foot tread rudely on such hallowed grounds. Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.

If our eyes grow dull, other hands slack, and other hearts cold in the solemn trust, ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remain to us.

Let us, then, at the time appointed gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with the choicest flowers of spring-time; let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved from dishonor; let us in this solemn presence renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have left among us a sacred charge upon a nation's gratitude, the soldier's and sailor's widow and orphan.

II. It is the purpose of the Commander-in-Chief to inaugurate this observance with the hope that it will be kept up from year to year, while a survivor of the war remains to honor the memory of his departed comrades. He earnestly desires the public press to lend its friendly aid in bringing to the notice of comrades in all parts of the country in time for simultaneous compliance therewith.

III. Department commanders will use efforts to make this order effective.

By order of

JOHN A. LOGAN,
Commander-in-Chief

N.P. CHIPMAN,
Adjutant General

Official:
WM. T. COLLINS, A.A.G.

An excellent reminder as well as a look into the history of this holiday.

I grew up in the South back when folks still carried on about all the "lost cause" nonsense. We didn't celebrate Memorial Day; we did Confederate Decoration Day instead. memorial Day's a lot better.

Rights inhere in individuals and the voluntary groups they form. States have no rights at all; instead, they have the job of correctly recognizing and protecting the rights of their citizens. The southern states might have justified slavery as a matter of "states' rights," but that argument is totally bogus.

I too am from the south and slavery was not an issue of the confederacy rather it was taxation imposed that eventually produced hostilities.

I'm not sure about taxation as a great issue. However, the manufacturers of the North pressed for protective tariffs, which increased costs to the South for imported goods. This was an issue, but perhaps not as easy to propagandize on as slavery was. Even though slavery might not have been the biggest contention at the outset, this "peculiar institution" surely became so.

Re: Lest WE Forget

Just to put my two-cents-worth in the "discussion" on North vs South in the conflict which spawned the creation of Memorial Day, the South did start the conflict by seceding from the union because of policies and tariffs inflicted on them by northern interests. Slavery was just one of several things. States rights was a major issue. The economy of the South was founded with, and dependent upon, slave labor, with acceptance by all in this "new" country, and the abolition of slave labor would have had an immediate, ruinous effect on it.

It is apparent that cultures cannot be changed immediately. Look at Iraq or Russia in fairly recent times. Iran's culture was changed immediately by the Ayatola after the Shah was deposed, and it had a devastating effect on their country.

So, the matter is one from which we have learned something. In the big scheme of things, what matters most is that we do not forget those who gave their lives, well-being, or service to this country, which I believe has been made better for the North and the South and the United States (and much of the world, too) as a whole!

Thanks

I love this country and though born an raised in the south I've been to each state of the union and felt home there too.

"Honor those who sacrificed all for our freedom" I've always enjoyed reading the stories from the Civil War. I feel for the men as they moved towards a battle, sometimes for days, through inclement weather or scorching heat. I sometimes wonder if "We the People" truly understand what it really means or understand what it means to "give the last full measure" for freedom. On this day that is set aside to remember our fallen defenders, thank the soldiers you see, because next year it might be one of them that we remember!

Just saw this about the sentries who guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier again this year. Worth the watch.

When I was in the army band in DC, we mingled occasionally with the Old Guard. Cripes, those guys were like statues even off duty. I think they slept at attention. I never saw people take their work as seriously as those guys; shame we can't bottle it and pass it around. Good link.
