Refrigeration Unit Evaporator Choking Problem

05/30/2010 12:22 AM

I am working in air separation plant. our plant commissioned 12 months before. for past 4 month we are facing a problem of evaporator of refrigeration unit getting choked with rust particles which are coming from air lines and surge vessel. at present we clean evaporator (aluminium) with nitric acid every month. is there any permanent solution?

Check out rust inhibitors such as this: White Rust Inhibitor for galvanized piping.

Google, "Rust Inhibitor for refrigeration."

rust particles which blocks and chokes pipes or tubes are mainly a result of errosion to conduits inner surfaces due to saturated water in the air system. 2 remedies to such phenomena; 1-install humidriers up stream surge vessles. 2- water traps on vessles bottom and/or lowest points of conduits before evaporator air inlet.

Install an air filter before the evaporator. or Use stainless steel piping and surge vessel. And flush your system (use water) before putting it to operation.

For diagonizing the problem, the application of the air separator and location of the unit should be known. If the applications is for dry air used in glass bottle blowing industry, the OEM has enough precations inbuilt for such problems. If the plant location is in humid areas such as mumbay chennai or culcutta with sea shore, then the air intake should be well treated before introduced in to the separator. Normally, the fresh air is pre cooled and excess moisture removed by introducing final chilled air coming out of air separator using a shell and tube heat exchanger as the final air coming out of air separator is to cool to be used for end use. This way partial removal of moisture which is the main reason for corrosion and rust formation can be reduced. The body of the main air separator shell and coil used to be munal or aloy metal to avoid corrosion in the precess if the equipment is procured from branded manufacturer. Fresh air should be introduced through air driers with silica gel absorbets. I dont know how u r using nitric acid to clean aluminium evaporators? There are chemicals with inhibtors that is safe to descale

Such as scal gun etc. But frequent descaling will reduce the life of exhancger and leaks may develop. U better take up the problem with OEM
