The use of Sea Water for a Cooling System can be very expensive. Every "Whetted Part" (a surface that is in contact with the sea mater) will need to be evaluated and designed to consider:

  • Corrosion - The effects of the high concentration of salt
  • Erosion - The effect of possible "sand" being present in the sea water intake during stormy periods.
  • Sea life - Mussels and barnacles in their microscopic juvenile stage are just two of the critters that can then grow and foul the inside the system

GA. Not to mention scaling due to the high TDS content of the water.

seawater is a very aggressive fluid and a careful material selection is needed, have a look at this example:

Rejecting whales, dolphins, cod, hake, crabs, molluscs, barnacles, etc., from the intake?

Well... I guess you are asking a question.

What noone has mentioned so far is capital cost.

Seawater cooling systems tend to have higher capital cost than the other two likely cooling system alternatives; cooling towers and air coolers.

Cooling towers and air coolers have thier own disadvantages; one of which is typically higher operating costs.

My opinion only
