Aluminized Steel vs Stainless

06/02/2010 8:38 AM

I am in the Northeast U.S., currently looking for a new furnace. I have noticed that some of the furnaces I've looked at use an aluminized steel for the heat exchanger. Is this as good or better material than stainless? My concern is that the aluminized coating probably does not extend to material edges or edges of cutout areas. Thus, you would rust anyway, yes?

I don't think I would worry about it too much. It is common practice. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminized_steel

Some auto mufflers are made of aluminized steel. That is a pretty rough environment.

This probably doesn't matter much, but the thermal conductivity of carbon steel can be much better than stainless steel, depending on the specific type of SS used.

I have done pizza ovens and used aluminized steel (A.S.) . I never really have any problems with this.

The only issue I would have with it is if it has direct fire against it........but stainless will also have issues with this.

The other issue, is autistics, if it sits for a while without being fired up. it can oxidise and flake.

I basically used A.S. this to reduce the price of the oven. I have pictures of ovens in after about 5 years in used. I'll see if I can dig them up.

Stainless being famous for its uneven thermal conductivity, good pots and pans are constructed with copper or aluminum thermal diffusers. The aluminum on the heat exchanger offers corrosion resistance and better, more even efficiency in thermal transfer. All good.

In your mind what if any advantage does Bronze offer.

The main advantage would be heat transfer efficiency given the copper content of the material. Corrosion resistance would be less than aluminum because bronze does not self-seal the way an aluminum oxide layer protects the underlying aluminum. However, if you are using natural gas or propane as your fuel source which would limit the corrosive elements present, and you limit your input temperature, bronze, especially a thicker layer, would probably superior. It has the added advantage of being easily repaired / built-up by brazing with silicon bronze or low fuming bronze.

I Make Ovens. Aluminized Steel Mild Steel base of JKSteel Corporation-India has lasted more then 9 years now.

Ill Send pics of the oven of that old.

I belive SS409 Steel and Aluminized 120GSM- JKALUMI (JKALUM) steel last equal.

Edge Cut dose expose the steel. But the Aluminimum Silicon content dose resist it from spreading.
