Small Engine Hour Meter

06/04/2010 10:22 AM

I have a Briggs & Stratton #030210 Elite Series 13,500 Watt 15 HP Vanguard OHV Gas Powered Portable Generator With Electric Start.

I would like to add a surface mount hour meter for maintenance tracking. B&S does have a #5081H hour meter but the reviews I have read are mixed. One major draw back I see is the complaint that the non-replaceable battery only lasts about a year.

I have Googled "small engine hour meter" and have researched a dozen or so other types/brands but have seen various complaints such as small read out (3/4" X 3/16"), won't stand up to vibration, not water proof, short battery life, LCD readout bleaches out in prolonged, direct sun light, ect.

Does anyone have any real life experience with small engine hour meters?

I have no experience with these so any suggestions/recommendations for a quality hour meter for this application would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

KJK,

I have used Tiny Tach's for many years and they are good for logging hours but the rpm readings can be a bit off. this brand of hour meter does not have a replacable battery, they will last several years. The hour meter is encapuslated in Epoxy or urathane so it should be vibration & water resistant.

here is a link

http://www.tinytach.com/tinytach/index.php

I think that the price is $40-$50.

hope this helps

I believe there hour meters available that operate on various voltage ranges. Use the voltage from the battery thru an oil pressure switch to complete the circuit for the meter to operate. Mounting the meter in the least area of vibration and it should be OK.

If you have electric start, there are a lot of different hour meters that can be rigged to run off your ignition. Try looking up a dealership near you. A lot of equipment rantal companies use them. try calling one of them.

Addl info, delcity.net ,phone # 800.654.4757 page 166 of current catalog shows hourmeters and voltage ranges available. Pressure switch that closes with minimal pressure should be available thru local auto supply store (s).

Stihl chainsaw had an excellent unit, uses induction from spark plug wire to trigger, so no external voltage required. i think it was a sealed unit, but the batteries seemed to last forever.

However, Most of the vanguards have a solenoid in the carburetor that shuts off fuel when ignition is turned off. If this was my engine, and I had the carburetor with solenoid, I would go that route.

"Hobbs" brand hourmeters are hands-down the best. I have been working on equipment for 30 years, and only remember replacing hobbs meters when physically damaged.

good luck!

If you have a electric generating unit. Simply buy an hour meter which operates at the voltage you are generating and install it in the panel. What's the problem? Why go through all the trouble of powering one off the engine?

Thank you one and all for your suggestions/comments.

I purchased a Hobbs hour meter. I had room to mount it in the control panel.

This meter should work out fine.

Thanks again - KJK
