Need Advice Regarding Cold Cranking Amps of Battery

Hey all,

I'm having a bit of a dilemma. I have my car serviced every 5K miles. Oil change, tire rotation, that kinda stuff. They also check the battery and when I get in the car they left a slip with the results on my dash. I never read it just tossed it, I figure if something is wrong they'll tell me.

Well last time I read the slip and I am very concerned for my battery.

The slip says my battery is rated for 650 CCA(cold cranking amps) but when they tested it they found 715 CCA. Now I'm mighty worried. Where did my battery get those extra amps from? I don't think he is going out at night and stealing amps from other batteries. I know there are some of those evil Amp Pushers out on the streets but I keep my car locked up so I'm sure he is not buying illegal amps.

But I'm at my wits end here. Do I take the extra amps away from him? Where would I store them? In a cap? I know batteries can get real mad around caps, spitting mad you might say. Do I need to put him on an amp diet?

Giggle.

You have no problem here. The cold cranking amperage is a minimum rating the manufacturer designs for a battery when new. Your battery just happens to exceed this minimum rating by 10% according to the shop's meter.

Ha-ha. Liked the joke, but I'm impressed by the 715 amp. I thought 2 -300 was more typical. Is it a big engine? Diesel?

My pickup, with 330 cu in gas motor has a battery rated at 850 "cold cranking amps" and 1,000 amps at 32°F.

Here in Arizona we don't worry too much about cold cranking anything.

You're right. You know us Yanks, we do everything over the top! The present (replacement) battery may be larger than the original, too.

It's not your battery health in question it is the starter and it's aging; consider this a warning.

I imagine you are joking... but CCA is not measured while cranking -- the starter does not apply enough load other than for a few milliseconds. (If you assume sag to 11 volts, 715 amps is 7865 watts input.) Garages do not run a real CCA test, which requires the battery to be lower-than-usual ambient temperatures. Their test provides a fairly close estimate, based on amperage into a dummy load at ambient temp.

Your acidic assistant sounds in excellent fettle and should do fine.

Dr Ohm has a cure for excessive cranking ability; its called adding some R into its circuit; otherwise anno dominii will sort things out and your overactive 6 celled friend will then quickly slide into a senile decline .......and we all know where that ends!

Perhaps tho' the issue lay with the who rather than the w(h)att as anyone will tell you who has had their BP taken by an attractive clinician and this inspired your voltaic fella to give of his best.

Aye Curumba, you do have a problem! Do you know how many people are struggling because they do not have enough CCA! Well do you? My lord we must advise the government, we are talking, gluttony, you must must be taxed, others don't have what you have, redistribution, and at not the least global warming and environment concerns, you should pay others CCA credits due to you having more than your fair share! Outrage, world damage, and whoa to you for stealing the opportunity from others, shame, shame.
