I have been to all of the one day seminars and three day schools that the flow meter manufacturers and control valve manufacturers offer, and, yes, I could calculate the sizing myself now. I even have the programs that Jordan and Fisher use to size valves, however, I still find it easier to go to several companies for quotes and let them size their instruments for you. Just have available the piping size, flow rate, if the flowing material is liquid, have the density, temperature, pressure, allowable pressure drop, down stream pipe size changes, downstream equipment such as a heat exchanger, and so on. I have no doubt forgot some inputs, but the companies sizing expert will ask for anything I have forgotten. They usually get back to you the same day.
