2000 Chevy Cavalier - Stalling/Won't Start

06/05/2010 6:25 PM

Car will start for 2-3 seconds when key is on and 9 volts is measured at the injector plug.Car will then die out. And I get 1 -4 volts now measuring at the injector plugs. And of course it won't start again. I get no pulse at injector wire. I also ohmed out the injectors and they were at about 13 ohms.

I have been changing out parts from a running 2000 2.2 sunfire with this cavalier. The parts I have changed (trying to find this issue) is as follows:

Fuel pump, crank sensor, ignition module, map sensor, throttle sensor,ABS module and the air intake sensor.

I did get the car to run for about 2 hours and then same thing all over again. But it does seems to have gotten worse. I also hooked it up to a scanner and it read no OBD2 codes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have been working on this*** blessed car for 3 weeks. And at wits end with it. THANK YOU!!!

Here's hoping we can help you. Just off the top of my head, the injectors should have 12 volts applied to them and the ECM provides the ground. My first inclination would be to find out why you have the voltage drop at the injectors. What engine do you have in the car? At first glance you need to check back to the voltage supply to the injectors. I will try to provide more specific information once you provide the engine type .

Thanks for the reply. It is a 2.2 automatic transmission with no tach.

If you have the owners manual available , check if there is a fuse under the dash or hood or in the glove box that shows ECM or INJ. The circuit usually goes from the fuse block to supply the injectors. I would suggest that you unplug all the injectors, then check the voltage available, with the key on of course . If you have 12 volts now ,try plugging in the injectors one at a time and see if that voltage changes. If it does . you may have an injector wiring problem.

If you don't get the 12 volts to start out now you need to work back to the fuse block and look for a connection problem. Sometimes a fuse looks good ,but may not be. Do you have a standard 12 volt test light available to use? That should speed up your check out. Where did you probe to obtain the injector voltage reading previously?

Hi. I do not have the owners manual unfortunetly. But, The fuses are marked. I just tested the INJ fuse and it read 12.06 both sides. Then I checked the injector wire at the injector and got 9 volts(which is what I did also previosly). Usually it would fire briefly but this time it did not. I also have a multi meter for checking. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again.

Did you unplug all the injectors before you checked that voltage?

1) disconnect the fuel line and crank the motor (with ignition disabled), check for fuel flow. Should be a solid stream. If low, or not recently changed, replace filter.

2) connect gage and check fuel pressure. i would expect 40-45psi

3) Check that the injectors pulse when cranking. Low voltage, low pulse width, may mean a failed injector driver. Back probe the + side with plug disconnected using a DVM and read the analog display. The injector drivers may be replaceable separately or maybe integrated internally with the ECU.

4) check the plug connector to tje fuel pump on top of the fuel tank for over heated or burned contacts in the plug. The connector is not very stout and susceptible to serious degradation as the pump ages and current draw increases wiyj age

Sounds like you have checked out alot of possibilities. I wonder what voltage is required for the injectors to FIRE? I am thinking maybe 12 volts. The "circuit" that provides the voltage to 'fire' the injectors may be faulty. Maybe a general Tune-up would clear up or expose deeper issues? Spark plug gap/coil packs etc.. Good Luck! Mark

The security system shuts down the injectors. I would check for an indication that the security system has shut down the system.

Search http://www.automotiveforums.com/

Some ideas to consider or take to a dealer. Some locksmiths also do this type of work.

Do a Google search on ways to work around.
