Sounds a little like the rear end is going bad. You didn't mention how many miles you have.

Hey Bill,

You're dating yourself. The "rear end" in the Voyager in in the "front end" of the vehicle.

I agree that the drive train is the problem and the OP should take it to a shop. It won't be cheap.

It's impossible to diagnose problems this way.

"Dating myself?" Hell, I remember when automatic transmissions were new and not worth a dam! Maybe his problem is with his newfangled 'transaxle.'

Sorry ive never worked on your model heres some info from google.

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=auto+gear+box+removal+on+1998+voyager&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&ie=&oe=&rlz=1I7DKUK_en-GB&redir_esc=&ei=pgEMTIipKJz20wSmkN1n

but if you could pinpoint the location it may help reduce the costs by only repairing the faulty bits.

to assist you you could try attaching a small dictation type tape recorder or digital recorder on variuos parts around your engine and gaer box, then drive for a short distance stop a listen and try to pinpoint where the noise is.

also if you use a digital recorder you could send us the sound via mp3 as it may help locate and pinpoint the fault.

it may be somthing silly like and engine mounting broken and engine moving when on overrun as the engine rotates forward as the engine turns into a break

Get into a shop before the halftrack passes you the next in order of progression will be loud crunch...probably a worn bearing or bear adjustment needed.

Thank you for your reply. Is the converter a common problem on these models?

Top Ten signs of a bad torque converter:

#10 - It's found between an engine and transmisison which have the words "Daimler" or "Chrysler" cast in them somewhere;

#9 - Doesn't claim "Additional Oil" on Form 1299 with its tax return;

#8 - Your torque converter has been "balooned" more than Dick Cheney's arteries;

#7 - When you're not looking, it crawls off the flexplate and takes twenty minute paid "breaks" on the input shaft;

#6 - You wake up in the morning and find your torque converter sleeping with your neighbor's wife;

#5 - The lockup clutch has more "slop" than Madonna;

#4 - Your torque converter has been off on an Extacy binge for six days straight;

#3 - The hookers in Times Square tell you "We would, but we don't want to get caught with someone with a torque converter like yours.";

#2 - Sneaks out at night and holds up convenience stores for all the ATF they have on hand;

The Number 1 reason your torque converter is bad - Your torque converter has appeared twice on "America's Most Wanted".
