Flow Calculation from Orifice Plate

Can some one tell me how to calculate flow from orifice plate? I want to calculate the flow from the pressure difference recorded by a PLC.

Your going to have to be a LOT more specific.

Gas? Liquid?

Type: Sharp edged, square edged, concentric?

Taps: Flange, pipe, vena contracta...?

Hi vkenyen,

Killowatt0 is right - you need a lot more info.

Before you can know what Differential Pressure (DP) transmitter to use, you need to know the range of differential pressures the orifice will generate.

In the following diagram, the downstream tap of the orifice plate goes to the low pressure input of the DP transmitter. The upstream tap goes to the high pressure input of the DP transmitter.

Come back with the info Killowatt0 has suggested, and we can help further. Baybe this diagram helps.

whats list earlier, is just the begining, if liquid you would also need viscosities.

And CFD comes into effect.

It can get pretty intailed, with possible interations,

I believe what was mention earlier is type of orfices,

Sharp End, Re-entrant, Round Edge, Square edge.

This is one more "You work for me" type of question, with no homework. Still CR4 members are kind enough to help.

There are standards like like ASTM MFC-14M-2001 on the subject and many Internet sites, which OP should refer before coming to CR4

You can buy a flow computer like the Cameron Scanner 2000 to read the DP, Pressure and Temp. it will calculate the flow. You can program it for liquid or gas and it calculates flow devices like, Orifce, cone, Averaging pitot tubes.

You can then using Modbus you can communicate with your PLC to the flow computer and read the flow rate register with PLC. That way your really dont have to do anyting.

Or buy a Flow caluclation module for the PLC that way you can program it to do your calculation.
