What Do “Rapid Prototyping” Companies Actually Do?

06/10/2010 9:04 AM

Consider me a learner. I want to ask you a simple question so please answer me as simple as you can without any complex/technical detail.

I want to know , what does "Rapid Prototyping" Companies actually do. Will they make an exact running model of the product we want to produce or its just a dummy.

Let say , I want to make a new mobile so will they make a mobile model in fully working condition ? or They just make it with plastic part (dummy) to show us how its looks like.

OR

Let say, I want to make a toy , which is made with some specific metal and plastic part , so will they actually use the same plastic and metal and make the prototype ?

So we can test our products in ordinal form.

Hope you understand what actually I want to know.

Good morning peaceandlove

Whenever I need a general idea about something, I usually try Wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_prototyping

My old buddy seldom lets me down.

I hope you do not think me too bold, but may I ask where you are from?

The reason I ask, the Wikipedia article is written to be understandable. When you read the article before, did you read in english, or your native tongue?

Wikipedia is available in 16 languages. I have discovered this feature is commonly overlooked.

Doorman is correct. Wiki first to get the basics.

Rapid prototyping can produce an exact replica of your cad files in plastic only.

I have seen an operating gear train with six gears produced in finished, operating form from rapid prototyping.

Well, for your vanity/shaving mirror, I would say that a prototype would be 100% functional.

For your electronic equipments/devices/gadgets, a rapid prototype would most likely be a 'dummy'.

I must say, your interests are certainly diverse!

Last developments allow also parts made of metal by same 3D-printing technique.

Yes, but let's get them comfortable with the mature existing commercial process first. There are people producing circuit board conductors using this process, too.

I'm sure the state of the art is advancing even as I type.

Cheers
