Spray System For An Autoclave

06/09/2010 8:55 AM

I've been asked to develop a method for misting materials stacked on racks in an autoclave. The pressure in the autoclave will be about 20 psi and temps about 60 degrees centigrade. Water will be captured, filtered and recirculated.

This is a pilot program. A patented process is being scaled up from a successful lab sized result to a production scale so there is some uncertainty as to how much water will be needed and whether we want to fog, spray or do something in between.

Over-sized pumps, pressure regulation, manifolding and quick disconnects for the racks are not a problem.

Where I need help is selecting a jetting system that allows me to swap out jet sizes quickly.

Thus far what I have come up with are the replacement nozzles for injecting fuel into the burners of oil fired boilers.

Does anyone have a suggestion for inexpensive off-the-shelf jets available in multiple sizes? The autoclave is big. The materials are stacked and the number of jets needed will be substantial.

Thanks

L.J.

This comes to mind as a start:

You might try looking into spray nozzles for liquid fertilizer applications in agricultural production. Most are made of stainless steel or brass to resist corrosion and are also made interchangable for different spray patterns to adjust for crop height, wind speed, application rate and other options.

I recommend starting with www.teejet.com

I like that. More selection and maybe even quick disconnects?

Both links proved valuable. The one for crop spraying had an unexpected bonus in that it prompted me to ask questions I did not know to ask.

Thanks, both of you, for the support.

When you mention mist creation, the immediate technique that came to my mind is the ultrasonic misters.

Google "Ultrasonic mister"

Of course I have no idea whether this technique could be applied for your purpose.

Will you spray prior to or post autoclaving the load? The reason I ask is that this may determine the materials of construction and the quality of the spray/ mist. There are many autoclave designs where water is sprayed over the load for cooling purposes post sterilization - however as far as I am aware these spraying devices usually tend to be fixed.

20psi and 60DegC - this is not during the sterilization phase unless you are using something other than Steam.

This sounds very interesting and it would be good if you could keep us posted on how you get on.

consider pressure washer nozzles some put out a mist at lower pressures and they are quick connects.

Other problems in developing a successful manufacturing cycle have delayed the need for the autoclave. I've been instructed to divert my energies elsewhere until those issues are resolved.

Thanks to all for your support.
