How to Calculate Consumed Units in KWH

06/11/2010 6:15 AM

In my Electricity bill previous meter reading is mentioned as 18,237 and the current meter reading is 18,528. This is a 3 pahse connection with a connected load of 55KW. They have mentioned the consumed units in KWH as 5820. Wonder how they arrived to this figure!!!

18528-18237=291

You have either a VT or a CT (I suspect this one 100:5 ratio) for the energymeter or both VT and CT so that the multiplication factor x20.

291x20 = 5820

For 55kw, 5820kwh represents ~106 hours of operation. Not all of the 55kw may have been running, but the kwh seems realistic.

Somewhere on the bill, there should be a notation of the multiplier factor of the meter.

18,528 minus 18,237 equals 291. If the meter multiplier factor is 20, a 291 meter reading will yield 5,820 kWh output.

Hope this helps.

Is it the first bill ??

I presume that there must be multiplication factor in your energy meter. Please check it. How was the previous bills.? If this multiplication factor is not used then you may have to check with the authorities.

If you're not familiar with this " multiplication factor ", it is derived from the ratio of the current transformers the meter receives its signal from at the customer location. Not all transformers have the same ratio, hence the multiplication factor. One customer I knew had three different multiplication factors across 30 different sites. This number will never change at a particular site since these transformers are never changed unless your main power entrance circuits get replaced.
