New Motor Not Running

06/16/2010 5:13 AM

We have installed a new motor and connected with a DOL starter. It is not running after switching the start button. What will be the cause? I checked connections in the motor and starter and found it is correct.

Test if you have the required voltage at the motor terminals.

Voltage is zero. Contactor is not holding

What is the voltage at the up-side of the contactor? If zero, check for safety disconnect switch OPEN. If switch is CLOSED, check outlet voltage at all fuses in MCC. If any are zero- replace the fuse.

What is the voltage at the switch? If zero, check control transformer voltage (IN and OUT). If no voltage IN- check the fuses. If no voltage OUT, but voltage IN, replace the transformer.

If voltage IN and OUT, verify that contactor is powered when switch is closed. If it is powered, but not operating, replace contactor (or at least coil). If contactor is not operating, manually close contactor to verify that motor will run if power is delivered to it.

Since you stated that the contactor was not closed- the previous items should help resolve that condition. The following is what if the motor will not start when you manually close contactor relay.

If motor will not run, and everything upstream is OK, do a continuity test of motor windings, including all three phases for each phase input connection. If more than one phase shows continuity when you check a single input, windings are internally shorted and you need to return the "new" motor for exchange.

If you are an electrician, check the following,

1) Three phase input.

2) Control voltage.

3) Is the coil voltage of contactor is matched with control voltage?

4) When you push the start button, does contactor hold or not?

5) If contactor holds but motor don't run, then check motor is connected well according to its spec.

6) Check also the winding resistance of motor which should be balanced.

7) Have the supply fuses or the control fuse blown?

Push in the starter... does the motor run? If yes... problem is on the control side. If not, problem is on the power side. Is there a remote safety disconnect that is open?

Motors obviously run on magic smoke, as evidenced by the fact that if you let the magic smoke out, they no longer run. Get a magic smoke detector...

The factitious nature of my response is the result of the vague nature of the question. Do some proper testing and explain WHAT is not working, then post that so we can give you some additional suggestions.

Thanks everybody for your valuable time. Problem solved. The cable to Starter was not connected in the main panel breaker.

We all forgot the first rule of trouble-shooting: Is it plugged in?

#1 electrical troubleshooting question:

"Is it plugged in?"
