Type of Pump to be Used

06/19/2010 3:38 AM

We have replaced neat cutting oil by an water based emulsion in a gun drilling operation.

The cutting oil having a viscosity of 14 cSt was pumped using a vane pump giving 100 lpm @ 100 bar pressure.

With emulsion ( 2 cSt) the the pump pressure dropped to 60 bar initially. After 2 months of operation max pressure now developed is 40 bar.

Is the pump wearing down?

What type of pump should be ideally used for such application?

Is the oild viscosity increasing, or decreasing? Filters getting clogged?
I assume the oil is recirculated...
Does it matter? What is actually important? Probably the flow rate...

Your cutting fluid is probably deteriorating, losing it's lube properties. Try fresh fluid, although your pump is probably trashed from wear. For pumping water based coolant, plenty of additive must be kept in the mix, good filtration, and change the coolant now and then. It probably gets funky with bacteria anyway, which is hazardous.

Few pumps can compare with a good vane pump for service, but you must filter out abrasives, and provide some lubrication.
