Measuring Profile of Coils

06/20/2010 11:16 AM

My name is Adrian Sarpe and I am head of a material testing laboratory in ArcelorMittal Galati ,Romania . In my laboratory we are performing all kind of analyzes on siderurgical products , plates and coils - mechanical , metallographic and chemical .

My last task is to measure the thickness of coil in order to graph the transversal profile of the product . The device has to be a detector for thickness , assembled on a "pram" and connected to a PC which control the displacement of detector , receive the signal and graph the profile .

My great problem is that I have to make this measurement in laboratory condition , on a sample of coil ; verywhere I found something similar was on rolling mill conditions .

Does everybody has informations where I can find a producer of such dvice , because I have found only retailers for the detector ?

It was very close , but I'm looking for a device who measure the variation of thickness , with a resolution of 0.01 mm and a 1000-1500 mm travel .

Anyway , thank you very much !

Most process thickness gauges I am aware of are either time of flight ultrasonic (not common) or radiographic with an x-ray or radioisotope source of known power is on one side and a detector is on the other.

You're right , but my problem is not to find the detector , my problem is to find an automatic device , under PC control .

So why can't you use the same type of device that is used on the mill stand in your lab? I'm not understanding your problem apparently. does it not have adequate resolution? or is the issue you don't want to be bothered trying to figure out how to connect it to Labview and capture the data and present it? Are you simply wanting a turnkey thickness testing jig to buy already made?

The device situated in the rolling mill is integrated in the process ; it can't be removed . In another hand , we want to use it fast , anytime is requested a measure , on anykind of products - cold and hot strips and coils , plates - ours or from outside .

And yes , I want to buy an already made device !

so buy another one just like the one on the mill and connect it to labview and away you go. I don't see the problem.
