Petroleum Smell/Odour in the Borewell

06/21/2010 9:08 AM

we have noticed the eye burning petroleum smell in the water being pumped to our overhead tank from the past one to one and a half years.

Have approached the pollution control board but helpless and suggested to close the same. But the mines and geology people flushed the entire bore well and cleaned thoroughly. Even in spite of the same, till date we have the same problem.

We have 2 petrol pumps one about 100 feet away and the other 200feet away. we have also informed them to check for any leakage from their tanks and confirmed that nothing of that sort.

We have an other bore well next door which is doing good and is just 20 feet away from the petrol pump. Also, after this we almost checked all the surrounding bore wells for the odour. We found nothing of this sort.

Hence, kindly suggest us on the same as to how do we go about this.

I would guess that the underground geology slopes toward your stinking well. Or there was a trench dug between the two; fuel will tend to follow trenchlines from where the soil has been disturbed.

This website offers to trench around your spill and put up a barrier underground to stop the fuel from traveling to your well.

I can't find it, but there is another method that uses a pump to lower the water table immediately around the spill site and skim the oil that collects in the lowered area.

I have not seen the first method implemented, but have seen the pump system that removes oil from underground water tables in two locations in two different countries.

The first thing is to stop the leak or spill that is causing your problem. If that has been corrected, keep in mind that a little bit of fuel will contaminate a lot of water for a long time when underground. It takes a long time for the fuel to move through the soil.

If your spill is following a trench line, you could dig it up and remove the contaminated soil and get rid of the problem faster. Contact your local emergency services for more information about fuel spill clean up, and they might even send an expert out to do a survey. Keep in mind, if your spill leaves your property line, you could face fines beyond what you could face for the spill being on your property.

First, What country/region are you from?

This will help greatly in formulating a plan to help you.
