DC Motor Causing Serious Interference?

06/22/2010 12:56 PM

I have an inline inspection (DVT) that spits out corrupt data once the DC motor on the machine is running. Any idea to what to do? Can a motor be shielded, and how, or what?

Thank you

Try the following:

  • Wire an appropriately-rated silicon rectifier reverse-biased across the motor terminals
  • Wire an appropriately-rated 0.1μF polyester capacitor in parallel with it.
  • Wind each of the power leads to the motor round a piece of ferrite rod, as might be found inside an old medium wave radio receiver.

and report back.

the drive is the suspected not the motor,

you should use a line filter

I second the opinion. Line reactors (or line filters) will probably fix the issue. The drive manufacturer is your best choice for further help.

Also you need to be sure your data cabling is sufficiently isolated from the motor power leads, and properly shielded if required.

What kind of motor is it? What kind of drive? Please give some more information.

Also, please do not use acronyms (such as 'DVT') unless they are universally recognized (e.g. AC and DC). I came up with many search results relating to deep vein thrombosis, which I don't think have much relevance here.

I think it is an ( Data Visualization Tool) it is more likely to fit within the context

Wire 100nF polyester cap between the terminals of the motor - consider motor voltage when procuring

Wire 2pieces 10nF with sufficient voltage rating between each of the two terminals.

insert 2 100nH RF chokes in the wires leading from the power supply to the Motor. Mount the chokes very near to the motor terminals to keep the effective radiating area ("antenna" distributing the noise) as small as possible.

But consider the nominal current of the moter (e.g. 2Amps) when procuring the 100nH chokes. Correct current rating would be 1.5times the nominal current. if this is not done the current might drive the core into saturation and the inductance of the choke is lost - so is the filter performance.

lead the two connecting wires over a "current compensated" choke. This is a ring core with two windings with opposite direction of turns which compensate the high frequent noise in the motor dirive signal. Also here the nominal current of the motor needs to be considered.

Finally twist the wires between motor and driver. Or- if this alone does not help -shield the wires using a shielded cable. If this does not help alone you will need to look into the rest of the electronics: E.g. can you separate the power spply of the motoor frm the other electronics? Is the motor drive wiring running in parallel with the data signals? Can you separate motor drive from the rest of the tester electronic? Can you insert separated line filters etc? Can you hide the noise by putting the wires to the motor into some corners of the rack (capacity to ground and magnetic shielding when closer to iron), find better grounding of the DC Motor with an extra wire to the common power ground of the system (or directly at the powersupply).

Have you checked the brushes?

Look at the noise with a o'scope or preferably a spectrum analyzer to find the frequencies you are dealing with. Consult a book such as the Amateur Radio Handbook to build the proper filter to put inline with the motor.

I have found noise being placed back on the incoming power; an isolation transformer with filtration and MOV's may help on the comoputer end.
