Submersible Pump Installation

06/22/2010 1:42 PM

Dear sir,

I want to know that , during the time of sub mersible pump installation we need to fill the motor with distilled water .If it is true what reason we need to fill the distilled water.

Please contact the manufacturer of the pump!

Filling a motor up with water, distilled or not, is likely to cause it some serious damage!

If the pump instructions call for adding a fluid such as water or oil, one reason would be for thermal conductivity, so that the motor heat can be transferred to the external fluid in which the pump is submerged.

True,

There are oil filled motor submersibles.

And water cooled wet stator submersible deep well versions. These stators are the vacuum impregnated type.

But I have never heard of having to add distiled water to a motor.

But, you never know.

I just hope the OP checks with the Manufacturer.

Oops,

Maybe it is a wet stator deep well sub?

And this adding water is for start up?

?

The mystery, then, would be why the motor manufacturer has not filled it and sealed it prior to despatch. Making a mistake in the field would necessitate a warranty claim.

Oil is understandable, perhaps.

Why an electrically conductive fluid (even distilled water has a conductivity) is chosen is another mystery. It's a good recipe for an earth leak fault, after all.

The original poster needs to follow the instructions in the original equipment manufacturer's information!

Dear sir,

Please scan the page of the instruction manual of the pump that tells you to do this and post it here. I'm concerned that you may have misintepretated what was written there. I have worked with may brands, makes and models of submersible pumps and I have never heard of one that requires that the motor be filled with distilled water. The whole pump is supposed to be placed in the water intact, and the pump will continue to work as long as the NPSH requirements are met. There should be no need for you to even prime the pump, let alone fill the motor with water.

Here is a link to Hayward wet stator pumps:

I could not find anything about distilled water.

Not required to fill distilled water. Pump external fluid is act as aheat transfer medium in case of submercible pump

The best solution is to go through the manufacturer,s instructions. In Saudi Arabia in a German made famous pump 1) we filled with transformer oil for submersibles in sewage systems(homes, stations) 2) we filled with distilled water for deep well submersible water pumps I believe this is for cooling or heat transfer S.Sri

Not having had much experience with larger deep wells, but understanding that these pumps require critical flows for cooling,I surmised the reason for an initial filling of distilled (or potable) water for a deep well submersible (thinking the foot valve would trap the charge), would be to provide coolant medium until the the system was fully operational. The fact is, unless the riser were capped the well water would enter through the foot valve anyway. I can't think of a reason why you would have to "fill" it with distilled water.

Could it be this water "charge" is required to "bump test" for correct rotation?

Can you provide more detail on this "filling operation?
