Can We Use Api 5l x42 Instead Of Api 5l Grade B?

06/23/2010 2:38 AM

In our country we use Api 5l grade B in cities for pressure. 250 psi and Api 5l x42 for pipelines out of cities for pressure 1050 psi .

Can we use Api 5l x42 instead of Api 5l grade B in cities?

Dear Friend

Both of the materials belongs to the same family, Carbon Steel. The only differnce is the strength, pressure bearing capability. If API 5l X42 can sustain the pressure of 1050 psi, then this is obivous that this will sustain the pressure of 250 psi provided that the sizes and temperatures have no more variances in between. If there is more variance in size and temperature, then there is need to perform the stress analaysis to confirm the use of your material.

Best Regards

Can We Use Api 5l x42 Instead Of Api 5l Grade B?

Hi

thanks for your answer.

here it is believed that x42 is more brittle than

Grade B and is not suitable to be used in cities because if there would be an earthquake the probablity of fracture is more than Grade B.

is this idea true or not?

please introduce some refrences about this topic.

I did a quick check in ASME B31.3 (something you might want to do as well) and I don't see a different brittle fracture temperature for these 2 grades of metal. They just call out API 5L.

Allowable stresses for 5L X42 end at 400 degrees F but continue on past that for Grade B. For your service I wouldn't think this would matter.

You could always do impact testing on your materials. Remember brittle fracture is a function of temperature and thickness of the pipe.

Carrying what? at what pressure? What do the local laws say about it? you do not give enough information to answer intelligently. If there is any possibility of H2S in the system, you may need the lower strength to prevent cracking.

hi thanks for your reply. but there is no local laws about this topic. pipe is carrying natural gas.

The <...we...> can do whatever it likes.

However there are commercial and possibly criminal consequences for using something other than the material that a standard requires.

If it meets spec and is cost effective then sure....however there might be a reason that one is being used over the other, what you don't know you don't know, so some research is prudent...

Maybe there's a better way to go...

..."Numerical simulations of earthquake fault ruptures performed by Bartlett and his students show a geofoam-protected pipeline on the valley side of the Salt Lake City segment of the Wasatch fault could withstand up to four times more vertical force than traditional soil cover."...
