To Bring down Concrete Temperature to 23 degree Celsius..

06/23/2010 11:32 PM

We are going for TG deck concreting, site ambient temperature is 32degreeC,we going for chiller plant whic can reduce the concrete temp to 2degC...also adding ice cubes crushed to 3mm size into construction water tank...during trial mix got the concrete temp of 27degC...For more detail....M40 grade, cement temp in bulker is 52degC..pls advice to bring down the temp to 23deg C...In advace ...yhanks

Some more specifications, as what you will do - TG deck concreting? - volumes, thickness, surface, where applied - type of reinforcement etc, would help. Water is only a relative small part of the mix, to cool it down. What about the other components: sand, rock or pebbles. How long are your mixing times, and the transportation cycle? And the temperature you work in outside?

1600m3 and using 20mm and 10mm course aggregate, fine aggregate...normally the mixing time is 5-10 mins practically...transporting time is around 15mins...outside temp is 32degC

Add flake ice to the mix. Several refrigeration equipment manufacturers, northstarice.com to name one, make machines that produce this form of ice. They have been used in concrete dam cooling, for instance. Search "flake ice makers" to find other examples.

A company called Lighthouse Utility Solutions in Cincinnati, OH, USA has a product called "CooLater" that is an ice-based thermal storage system that makes flash ice and 0degC chilled water- no antifreeze or other chemicals. You could use the water through a plate-and-frame HXU to make 1degC water that could be used to mix the concrete. You could also circulate the 0degC water through plastic tubing embedded in the concrete during the pour (using a separate site-based unit or the initial machinery could be truck mounted- with a generator if needed depending on site power availability- then extract the tubing when ready for final finishing. If you need to keep the concrete cool after the pour during curing, you could lay the tubing over plastic sheeting on the concrete surface and cover with straw (or other insulator like fiberglass sheeting).

The company is relatively new- so may not show up in search. Contact me for more information.

Unless you make soup, with the temperatures of the ingredients given, the water will not be able to cool down your mix to the required temperature, even during the transportation cycle. (if more than 2500 psi)

Therefore you need to bring down these base temperatures - shade, pre- cooling of the masses, like chilled water pipes through it. Or you need to cool your mixer, double wall? During the curing of the concrete you will need to take other countermeasures like permanently cooling down the pour (the placed concrete, sorry) When placed, cover with tarpaulins and let water run over it. As soon as curing appears, sprinkle with cold water. If the thickness (sorry, not communicated) is high you'll need to cool internal with permanent piping (non removable) and water.
