06/30/2010 1:44 AM

Dear All

There's a pipe contained cold water with stereofoam insulated and then covered by stainless steel sheet.

Along the time because condensation process on the stainless sheet, there are pocks on

stainless sheet. Is any way to polish these pocks?

Domestic surface cleaners might prove suitable.

Cillit Bang! or Mr.Muscle surface cleaner, perhaps (usual disclaimer)? Both of these can be sprayed on and wiped off with a cloth.

You should try following process:

Wash the surface clean with water & wire brush. Take 5% HCL or H2SO4, soak the affected surface with it with the help of cotton cloth piece for 24 hours and the wash it off with water and nylon brush. If you neutralise with mild alkaly solution, it will be better.

A common product in most hardware stores is called "Barkeepers Friend." It is especially for cleaning stainless steel. It looks like ordinary sink cleaner, but the special ingredient is OXALIC ACID which is a specific for RUST Stains. Thanks to our helpful brethren in the EPA, OSHA, or whoever, hardware stores don't carry straight oxalic acid powder anymore.

You might be able to get oxalic acid in the form of a wood bleach at a lumber yard or wood craft store.

That would be a light gage stainless (0.018" thick ?) Even though there is a insulating backer which by the way is suppose to keep it from condensing. When you polished to remove the pock mocks you may dent the stainless. Can you remove the SS sheeting and inspect your insulation, I doubt if its good or enough insulation that it can insulated it from condensing ambient water vapor? think about replacing the stainless

Your grade of stainless is probably not a good one, also the atmospheric conditions where it is pocking could be a problem.

To be successful stainless steel needs to be exposed to the air, any pocks exclude the air so become progressively worse if the pocks are not completely removed and the steel re polished they will just get worse regardless of cleaning. As mentioned it will be a thin grade of stainless so might be impracticable to remove the pocks and better to replace the steel.
