Is Tire Curing Press Considered As Pressure Vessel?

06/30/2010 3:32 AM

Hi,

Iam working in a tire industry. Does somebody knows that whether a Tire curing press comes under the category of pressure vessel. Inside the curing press, we have the mould which forms the outer shape of the tire. It has bladder (rubber ) which has water or compressed gas (18 bar) which pushes the green tire against the mould to form the shape. Will it be considered as pressure vessel?

If so, then it will have an operating pressure and a test pressure rating stamped on its outside and a periodic testing procedure will form part of the requirements for its having test reports by the Engineer/Surveyor from the company responsible for providing burst indemnity insurance cover on it.

Test reports should be filed in the General Register at the facility and be available for inspection by any interested party.

A cylindrical or spherical metal container capable of withstanding pressures exerted by the material enclosed. Pressure vessels are important because many liquids and gases must be stored under high pressure. Special emphasis is placed upon the strength of the vessel to prevent explosions as a result of rupture. Codes for the safety of such vessels have been developed that specify the design of the container for specified conditions.

Most pressure vessels are required to carry only low pressures and thus are constructed of tubes and sheets rolled to form cylinders. Some pressure vessels must carry high pressures, however, and the thickness of the vessel walls must increase in order to provide adequate strength. Hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders are machine elements that are forms of pressure vessels.

Yes, anything above 1 psi is condidered a pressure vessel, so does the pressure cookers at home front. GJ

Since your machine was built by someone, the decision regarding whether it was a pressure vessel was made at that time. If it does not have a defined pressure rating clearly posted on it and if it does not have a pressure safety relief valve, then it is not a pressure vessel.

I do not see how this device could be considered a pressure vessel any more than a hydrostatic press or a tire on a truck running at 125 PSIG internal pressure. For all practical purposes, the bladder inside the tire is no different than an inner tube in a truck tire or a bike tire. It is pressurized for some defined time to serve a defined purpose and can be de-pressurized at any time if that purpose is no longer present.
