Does slower fan consume less energy?

If the ceiling fan is on slow speed, does it consume less electricity?

How? Prove with electrical calculations.

Alright! My latest victim. So what is it now, 10, 12, 15? I've lost track already.

It's empirical.

If power consumed is pressure gain multiplied by flowrate, then lowering the flowrate and reducing the pressure gain by slowing the fan speed will, by any measure, consume less electrical power.

V=IR

P=IV

As a mechanical engineer I know it is a fact that all electrical problems boil down to these two equations

Yes, If other parameters like fan blade diameter, Gap between the casing and impeller

( for axial fans),the external air flow resistance etc remain the same. If so since the

air volume (work done )is less as the speed is low, the power consumed will be low.

The power consumed by a fan is proportional to about the third power of the tip speed, all other things being equal.

Here's a related question. Does an incandecent (don't know how to spell it) lightbulb used with a dimmer consume less power when dimmed than when at full brightness?
