I still think it is the pick up in the fuel tank.

Congratulations on finding that. That is the reason people spend the God awful money those scopes cost. But how did the reluctor ring get damaged?

Back to Bob's school of auto mechanics.

Rule #1 .....The last one that touched it broke it.

Rule #2 .....If it ain't broke don't fix it.

with the amount of technology in modern cars that should not take long

being a good mechanic nowadays is almost like being a bloody brain surgeon with all this technology.

at least with most people you get to ask some of them questions.

The future of auto repair is facing a problem in America. We have long had the gear heads that could look at a basket full of parts, find the bad pieces, and reassemble it to work just fine. And we had the computer geeks that can figure out so many of the finer points of the modern computers.

But neither was comfortable in the other's world. Today's auto mechanic needs to be a wizard with computers, and willing to get his (or her)hands dirty.

I know thats the problem, you would not beleive the jobs i have done on cars where the garage have said to the owner theres nothing wrong with it according to the computer.

You mean apart from the fact it wont run.

because theres a loose earth lead.

a loose battery terminal. ( the car in question a rover 75 had been to the garage 5 times with intermitent none start) the first thing i did when i opened the bonnet (hood) was pull on the battery terminals. DOH !!

a corroded plug on the crankshaft sensor.

a bit of metal swarf on the end of the crank sensor.

the ht lead has rubbed through and is shorting out.

the wires to the lamps have been squashed between panels.

the central locking solenoids plug has fallen off.

The egr valve has stuck open = loss of power

Now none of the above has sensors on them so the computer cant tell if theres a fault.

And on all of them the garage said there was nothing wrong with the car, this is why i was talking to the owner at the side of the road after the car had broken down

Then and yes all the above were actual faults that had been on the vehicles when it was taken into a garage and sent out again still with the fault on.
