Welding of Dissimlar materials

02/26/2007 1:16 AM

While welding of two different material (e.g. welding of Alloy steel with Carbon steel), why it is recommended to use lowers side of welding electrode (electrode for Carbon steel material)?

Because good properties derived from alloying remain so ,only if you do not add more Carbon to it

How are you defining alloy steel? Carbon steel P1 gr1 welded to alloy T304 P8 gr1 use E309 'A' number 8 filler metal. Carbon steel to alloy 2205 would require a nickel filler metal like Inco 625. Typical carbon steel SMAW electrode E6010/E7018 will not (Stick to/Dillute with) alloy steels like 304. E309 will (Stickto/Dillute with) carbon steel and 304 stainless steel. Weld metal must also have mechanical properties at least equal to the weaker side. So it is NOT recomended to weld with lower side electrode.

Hi .. when you say welding of alloy steel to the carbon steel ... the alloy content is very less. mechanical property requirements may not be great. In such cases, to save on the cost, MS electrodes are preferred. Actually, E 7018 would be preferred to E 6013. you will not be able to weld highly alloyed steels to the carbon steel by MS welding electrodes.
