Flange Sealing Without Gaskets

07/07/2010 11:54 AM

Hi all, our plant wanted to use a flanged bellow on the dry air duct which operates at a pressure with a very slight vaccum (+/- 0,5 kPag). The manufacturer of the bellow is telling me that for that specific type of bellows, they do not require a gasket to achieve sealing because the medium is dry air (if it is wet, then they need a gasket), and as long as the bolts are torqued to the correct rating, it will not leak. Does anyone perhaps know why this is so? Because to me, a gas is easier to leak through gaps than liquid? Thank you.

hello guest,

first of all if the manufacturers says so then the bellows are designed accordingly.

the joint design by the manufacturer for the bellow might consider these factors and above all he might have used soft material (as you mention the bolting requires a specific torque) for the joint as the parameters stated by you are not harsh.

i suggest you to understand and check the design of the end connection from the manufacturer before going for the bellow.

I would ask the manufacturer of the bellows for an explanation. In my industry, wet air contains water vapor. The water vapor molecule is smaller than the H2 and O2 molecules that make up most of the air, so they will leak through a smaller opening.
