Switching substation just consists of switchgear and sometimes basbars but the important thing there is no power transformer while the ring main unit shall composed of two number of ring main switches and one number Tee-off fuse switch for control and transformers upto 1000kVA

The concept of the RMU originated in the UK but because of the cost savings that they gave the user, the design and manufacture of RMU was quickly taken up by manufacturers in many countries across the world. Often in the UK the units are out door types.

Here is ring main switch function:
1- coninuously carry ring fully load current
2- make and break ring full laod current
3- carry the fulll system fault current for a 1 or 3 sec
4- make onto a full system fault current

Tee-off switches
1- continuously carry tee-off circuit full load current
2- make and breaker full load current of the tee-off circuit
3- make and break the full system fault current
