How to Charge the Spare Single Phase Main Transformer

07/09/2010 2:55 AM

I am using three single phase transformers as main step up transformer in a generating station. the forth single phase transformer is kept as spare. I think to keep ready the spare transformer i have to keep chagred its one winding so that the moisture will not enter in the insulating oil. what are methods to kept the winding charged continously.

Please suggest.

The question doesn't make sense yet. Transformers are, in the simplest of terms, coils of wire. They don't store charge; they convert AC power from one voltage to another. Please add more material to the question and re-post.

Assuming that this spare transformer is not in service, you may short circuit the LV terminals and then apply a low percentage voltage to the HV so that some current flows in the windings and the windings and the oil are kept warm. Please monitor the LV current while doing this and do not exceed the rated LV side current. This is one way of drying out the transformer.

I concur with electricalexpert65. We have been doing this for years at the power plants where we have maintenance contracts.

GA to you sir!

Dear Mr. KJK/USA,

This matter does not relate to this thread. Since I saw your name here and I did not have your mail Id., I did not know your mail to contact you.

The matter is that about 3 or 4 weeks you responded to my problem of restoring the CR4 DATA BASE, in CR4, and I could not retrieve, as suggested by you and I do not know at what step I made mistake.

Pl. suggest me how to retrieve the Data Base of my original link in CR4.

How to contact the MODERATOR, I searched different options nothing could succeed.

Please reply to me at sd610@rediffmail.com.

Dear Guest,

your question is the least informative as Mr.Slack has pointed out. Please

clarify the following points :

(1) Moisture will not enter if the unit is filled with Ins.Oil , silica gel is good, and no

leakage thro' the bushing ,if stored in a good ventilated area. It will be a good

practice to megger the transformer before putting it on service.

(2) If you still insist connect a low voltage AC power with proper tripping fecility

and short circuit the secondary, limiting the secondary current to the full load

current. Take extra precautions like- no one will change the AC input voltage

with out proper authorisation.

(3) I feel if your place is utilisation is rainy always , more humid ( sea shore), or any

leaky roof above you can be worried.
