Zooming around in Fractals

03/29/2005 9:59 AM

If you find fractal curves interesting, you should really try out the Xaos Fractal Zoomer. It's open source and runs on many different platforms. Installation (on Windows) is simple - unzip to a folder and run it. This program draws several different types of fractal curves and lets you zoom down to incredible detail. You've really got to see it to appreciate it. The program includes several well done tutorials on the mathematics of fractals and the construction of several different fractal sets.

Fractals and Nonlinear Systems

03/29/2005 5:47 PM

I really feel Mandelbrot was one of the greatest minds of the 20th century. To be more accurate, one of the great minds of all time. I believe his lack of fame is due to the fact that his ideas are so ahead of their time. Think about it. Physics must use physical ideals to approximate systems. For the last 2300 years, those approximations were limited to Euclidian Geometry, and more recently, well behaved functions. Mandelbrot effectively opened up a whole new class of problems to investigation in physics by providing a new set of "geometries" to use to approximate nonlinear physical systems. Who knows the discoveries fractals will usher in by finally being able to approximate these previously intractable problems.
