The Back Up Plan of Humanity and the Planet Itself..

02/26/2007 9:16 AM

This would be a really good movie plot.

In the year XXXX we will be facing the reality of extortion due to our own mishandling of the planet's resources. Everybody is dying from diseases, floods, and etc. Fortunately there was a great solution that will save the human race from extinction, it involved the capture of every being on the earth which was predetermined to be brought to life when the days of destruction and horror would be over. The way I imagine this would be accomplished is by storing the DNA and the steam cell before the final destination which would be predetermined by the proper location of being at a livable condition. Humans would be provided with information and instruction .. and most important with description of the mistakes we have made, which will prevent the disaster from happening again.

How important would it be to have a committee that will work on this type of issues? Would you want the planet live past it determined lifecycle which was doomed by mankind?

The human nature is to give life and if we defined that as our ultimate goal than everyone on the planet will have a second chance.

Does anyone see this happening sometime in a couple of 1000 of years, or as AlGore described it in a next century?

Who will be extorting what from us, and why??

The rest of your post is a little difficult to follow. Especially the bit about Algore, what's he got to do with anything?

John.

This might sound very mean, but in a way its true. The population is increasing very rapidly by the year. Having all the diseases, floods, and other "natural" events keeps the population in check.

Right now the US and other countries(not sure on specifics) are sort of having a space competition. This is great because its constructive and will decrease the time that it takes us to actually get on Mars (whenever that may be, 1000+years?), the same way we went to the moon.

I don't know what you mean when you say save everything on earth by storing DNA ect. and that humans would be provided with information and instruction?

If there was to be a committee that worked on this issue I think that would be a great idea. Maybe they would call it the New Atheists and we could get rid of religion since thats seems to be the root of some wars, eg 9-11. Sorry if this may offend people just my opinion.

1,000 years. . . i guess it depends on how the north korean uranium enrichment goes? but i also read that we are supposed to be going into an iceage soon?

Well hopefully this will be of some significance or maybe just totally off topic.

Also. This may be a dumb question, but if the ice caps melt, why would the oceans rise. If ice is less dense than liquid water and about 10% of an iceburg is above water, wouldn't this balance out? Unless its just the fact that the slight expansion in the water molecules due to extra heat that with all the water in the world a few degrees would make a large difference.

Not to defend religion, but to think it was the root of wars is silly. The root of wars and other human upon human violence was and is all about "tribalism", power and economics (read greed), and insofar as religion, nationalism or whatever took part, it was only a means to an end. That is not to say that religious leaders didn't start wars, only that religion wasn't the real reason, just a very handy and powerful excuse: a means to motivate the "troops". Radical Islam is a current and perfect example of this. The mullahs become quite powerful by their evil use and perversion of their religion but if they really believed what they were saying, they would be out there exploding left and right. But instead, they convince the more gullible of their flock to wear the explosives while they lead the cheerleader section and barter for favors and concessions with their power.

It has been said that nationalism is the last refuge of scoundrels. Actually it is only the next to last: religion is the last.

Ice caps over land masses mainly Greenland & South pole if melted would increase the sea level quite markedly, however this is not totally proven yet.

However purported sea level increases from current surveys have given both rising and falling levels. Due to the complex nature of measurement with all the variable statistics to be taken into consideration it will probably be another 80 years of computerised statistics before accurate trends can be realised. This will be mainly from satellite data as against sticking a pole in the mud and checking the marks.

Continental plate movement ,land masses rising due to less ice mass on top of them, ocean temperature, volcanic activity and many other variables leave us a long way short of giving a definitive answer on sea level trends at the moment.

As for a back up plan for humanity I think mother nature will take care of that, we certainly wont so long as we have politicians lawyers and insurance company's

First of all, we flatter ourselves by thinking we have the power to destroy life on earth, or even irreparably damage it. We do not, and whether we ever do at some point in the future is unknown.

What we do have is the power to make it unlivable for mankind and many individual animal and plant species, and also upset the balance of nature for a time, but life itself is very tenacious and resilient overall, and will be here for a very long time whether we are or not, unless some very large natural catastrophe wipes it out.

Efforts would be far better directed at trying to minimize our environmental footprint, and harm rather than some effort to preserve seed stock for some future resurrection.

Algor is an extremist, but hey, he (claimed to have) invented the internet among other things, so who am I to judge?

RE: Algor is an extremist, but hey, he (claimed to have) invented the internet

We live in a time where many capabilities need be combined, in order to enable significant human advances. A typical scenario involves Invention, Political Action, Financing, Construction, and Maintenance.

Leading contributors in each stage might feel some sense of achievement for their part, since all are necessary for the endeavor to succeed.

With regard to the Internet, Politico-speak (or ignorance) has confused these aspects, accidentally or maliciously. All's fair in politics, especially lying about the other guy's lying.

For the record:

In a March 1999 interview with Wolf Blitzer, Gore said, "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet."

In this context, one might conclude that Al Gore was referring to political leadership rather than invention.

Fwes,

I didn't think he meant he did it with a soldering iron.

Algorites are just a little too extreme for my tastes is all, but its a big world, and it is, in the final analysis an advantage that we all don't see things the same way.

Whenever humanity or any significant portion of it has marched in lockstep, the results have tended to be rather ugly.

Regards, Greg

Actually, it not a new idea. I remember something similar several years ago.

But, you're not actually talking about the movie but whether we should have people working on these issues, to prevent it happening or to do something to ensure that life will resume when the planet has recovered from all the destruction we've been doing to it.

Like a lot of movie plots, some things just don't add up. They usually do something to add to the excitement and forget about the possibility of things actually happening the way they show it to happen. So let's forget about the movie.

Storing DNA and stem (not steam) cells and programming them to regenerate or change into humans in the far future is probably not so far fetched, if present research is to be believed. However, I do not think that the Earth will recover from all the damage within a reasonable length of time, if ever.

Take a look at Mars. It seems to have had flowing water in the past. But from all indications, it seems to have lost it millions of years ago. And it still hasn' recovered it! The atmosphere is also most carbon dioxide. 'Sound familiar? We need to solve our problems now! Not in the far future when we're all dead!

Hmm.. well i must have misunderstood what you wrote. "But, you're not actually talking about the movie " I never knew there was a movie like this, If there is id like to see it.

As far as solving our problems. There are lots of discussions on cr4 about global warming. If you want to continue, I'm all for. But I'm going to read them over just for the sake of repeating ideas.

I can't remember the title. It was a long time ago. The plot deviates a little from what you stated. They stored their DNA and then space travelers chanced upon them, brought them back, etc.

Your post had three questions:

How important would it be to have a committee that will work on this type of issues?

  • What issues? The storing of DNA and stem cells? Personally, I think we should be trying to solve the problem, not avoid it.

Would you want the planet live past it determined life-cycle which was doomed by mankind?

  • Of course.

Does anyone see this happening sometime in a couple of 1000 of years, or as Al Gore who thinks that the planet will be flooded due to global warming in a next century?

  • Seeing what happen? The solution to our problems, the DNA thing, or the flooding? Depends on what we prioritize in the next decade or so.

Pardon me for saying this but Electroman was right when he said he couldn't follow you. I had problems myself but just forged on.

There is an alternate non-anthropocentric way of looking at the crissis which we face today as a result of man-induced ecological change in the planet. Everything in nature has growth and decay. Many species who once lived and survived for much longer than us humans are extinct. Even stars die when they run out of fuel. Can we alone escape what appears to be a law of nature. Of course if only we had not evolved capitalism, civilization might have survived much longer. It is difficult to hazard a guess as to whether we could have avoided that pitfall. But then perhaps society would have developed some other type of decease. Given a galaxy with thousand billion stars intelligent life must have evolved in at least a few places. But non of them apparently evolved to a stage where they could contact us because of the law of nature alluded to above-- they never became intelligent enough to overcome their natural animal nature.

I apologize for vaguely constructed questions, but I know that the idea I was getting across was somewhat there. It was interesting to hear everyone's opinion especially the one posted by Yanthram "It is difficult to hazard a guess as to whether we could have avoided that pitfall." At this point in time trying to rescue the humanity from the ultimate distraction should still be an option, the hope examplifies the human achievements and the extent that a human being can go to.

Regarding the religion topic earlier I believe we should be able to express ourselves in any way we like as long as the religion is not the cause of the war. I'm on the other hand is multireligious, cheers everyone.

Nonetheless I thank everyone for being open-minded about this topic and participating in my imaginary rescue plan.
