PDH Scams

07/12/2010 11:44 AM

I have seen some sites where they offer to provide PDH certificates after viewing a webinar or answering some questions about an article.

The very design of these sites looks suspicious, but most than everything the fact that they use third-party and even pirated material for their courses.

Has anyone of you tried them? I have searched for comments on those sites (pdhcenter, pdhonline and pdhengineer) but they look clear.

For me they look like credit card scams, but the idea of earning some PDH points on the lectures I have to do anyway is very tempting.

Most important question to ask: which universities are offering the PhDs? If they are unaccredited with a government sanctioned education board, it's probably a scam.

Come to think of it, most of them are, anyway.

We covered this a while back, didn't we. If I where Boss and some smart cooky would show me a PhD, in whatever, I would wait until I see his more important qualities first. To many to mention here but just going by a piece of paper is not the way to evaluate the potential of any person.

Well, the MN's have a different view but they have no time and insure them selves and have to go by the book. Hiring and sacking, at will, is not politically correct any more, so I hear. Space wasters can hide behind anything. The true dynamic and creative people are still hired and picked like ripe cherries. You know one if you see or hear one. Yep they do make a sound, when they drop.

What a waste of resources these PhD's and the pursuit thereof. Give me a true believer any day, Ky.

Sorry

Over worked and under paid. How stupid of me. It just doesn't take much to get me started on this. I mean get me started on what I thought this was about .

The dark side made me do it. Good thing is that I'm over it. Thanks to Kaisan and the silent Planet.

I repent, Ky.

Hi gussosa,

This is my understanding. PDH = Professional Development Hours. These are continuing education credits that must be accrued to maintain a Professional Engineer License. They are obtained by purchasing study materials, (I have ordered them over the internet and gotten both tapes and hard-copy materials), studying said materials, and completing a test. You submit the test and, if you pass, you are awarded the PDHs.

As to whether particular sites are valid, it's hard to say. My experience with 2 sites was good. The PDHs I earned were accepted by my Licensing Board.

A good source of information in the US is here.

For your country, I imagine you can get help from your Licensing Board.

Mike

There isn't a real Licensing Board in Uruguay. The Secretary of Education and Culture approves a certain career for a certain university. You graduate and that's all. You don't need to keep studying.

I need the PDH's for my job at the university (not for the others). I need to prove I have kept updating myself.

Thanks for the link.
