Pneumatic Test Pressure

07/12/2010 12:06 PM

I have seen in many company standards says Pipe pneumatic test shall be carried out for the test pressure of 1.1 times design pressure or 700 kpa(100 PSI), whichever is minimum. I don't know the basis for 700 Kpa (100PSI).

Could you please explain me the fact behind this.

Regards,

K.Uthayasankar.

Is that after a hydraulic test to a higher pressure?

[The original poster's question might make the more sensitive reader nervous, because 5psi of air is very dangerous if it is propelling a large manhole cover in the direction of an unsuspecting Engineer....]

Common sense.....

Please specify which company standards that you seem to recall.

Never heard of the requirements that you listed. However it is common to test at 1.5 the system/equipment rating.

hi, you have listed that the pneumatic test shall be carried out of 1.1 times design pressure. This can be done in everywhere but regarding 700kpa i haven't ever come across. you have mentioned that whichever is minimum it can be done. So i think due to inherent dangers associated with pneumatic test the pressure of the air/gas should be minimum. Thats why that company might be used of 700kpa.

Tend to agree with Natarajan.

ASME-section VIII - Pressure vessels uses 1.1 times MAWP (or design pressure I think) for pneumatic testing. This is a requirement if used in place of hydro test.

It seems to me that the 100psi limit is an in-company rule for "leak testing", not pressure testing.

Personally I avoid pneumatic pressure testing if at all possible.

I think that this explains everything you need to know
