VW Polo TDi - Warning Lights

07/13/2010 5:23 AM

What are the possible problems associated with the following two warning lights which came on simultaneously shortly after driving off?

The glow plug sign flashing + the "engine" sign on continuously.

On starting the car, the glow plug light came on and went off almost immediately which is normal. All warning lights went off on starting, again as normal. About 1 km down the road noticed the flashing glow plug coil sign and the steady engine sign were on. Stopped the car.

VW typically uses a timer relay to shut off the indicator light. A second relay should interrupt current to the glow plugs after the motor start6s and the starter is disengaged. The control unit can sense of the second relay is stuck (contact points welded shut). The high current draw will burn out the glow plugs, can drain the battery below something like 8 vDC and the control unit and motor will no longer run.

Thanks for the response.

Took the car to a mate who has the latest diagnostic tools - the fault code was for a speed (rpm) sensor failure. This had only occured once and may well be spurious. He re-set the system and all appears well.

An interesting thing is that apparently if the brake light switch fails (which is not uncommon in these cars according to the agents) this also results in the glow plug sign flashing.
