Bench Grinder For Stainless Steel

07/19/2010 10:30 PM

I have a need to grind down sharp edges of a high grade Stainless steel clamp/ring.

I'll be grinding several hundred at a time. I just need to knock off ( DULL) the sharp point or about 1/8" or less of the steel clamp/ring.

The clamp/rings are:

  • 1.60mm thickness
  • 516 Stainless Steel
  • I have a 6" wheel type grinder that turns up around 3600 rpms

QUESTION:

What type or style grind wheel should I use? Grit? Material?

I had better results with sand paper and rubber backing disk. Or a belt with soft (under) layer.

Once you go for good quality, a #80 or 60 will be fine.

You will never have the same result with a stone.

I have some here that last very long. (Norton) And you will have less mess.

I am sure you know this but what ever you use make sure it has never be used on Carbon Steel.

The best and fastet way to get this done is by using a belt sander. Several companies make a 2 or 3 " belt sander that will do the job. Belts cut faster, load less and are available in a wider variety of grits. Burr King, baldor, grizzly are some of the companies that offer these style of grinders. Depending on the series of stainless you are grinding a Norton Norzon (blue) belt will probably give you the best finish.

How about using a machinists deburring tool? A lot less clean-up and probably quicker. It will take care of edges. You will only have to take off the points with a hand held pneumatic belt sander.
