Cooling Load

I HAVE A THEATER ROOM IN A HOSPITAL

THE TOTAL VOLUME OF THE ROOM IS 140 M3

HOW MUCH COOLING LOAD WE NEED TO COVER THIS ROOM CONSIDERING THAT WE NEED 15 TIMES AIR CHANGE AS A STANDARD.

Rough numbers-

Total number of bodies in space (maximum) times 150 watts

Total of ALL lighting in room = Watts

Total of ALL equipment that MIGHT be in room in Watts

30 watts per Sq Meter for ventilation load

HP of fans (if known) x 750 watts OR add 10% to current sub total

You already know the airflow to maintain 15 Air Changes

Divide sub-total of wattage loads by 0.6 to arrive at Peak cooling wattage.

Cross-check total cooling load with calculated air flow times 25 = total watts peak cooling load. It is assumed that system design will use sub-cooling (for humidity control) and reheat for temperature control if calculated load is not high enough.

There ARE alternatives that will use less energy, but no way for this level of involvement to present or to calculate.

The approach presented in NO WAY is intended to be any level of true engineering calculation of actual loads. It is NOT to be used to purchase equipment. It is solely presented to allow an approximation of likely loads as a means of ROUGHLY ESTIMATING installation costs or operating costs.

Get the data and calculations required for HAVC, Eg Ambient temperature and humidity variations; Desired temperature and humidity; Heat sources –human, equipment etc; Fresh air requirements This will help in defining the minimum technical requirement, Refer to ASHRAE Handbooks if you can or consult a professional in this field

Air conditioning of an operation theater is different from normal air conditioning. It is to be designed as per the guidelines given in ASHRAE or CIBSE( U.K) or HTM. A.C system is one of the major sources for infection . Some of the features of OT AC are:- Use of HEPA filters Laminar flow Accurate control of R.H and DBT No return air Proper exhaust Correct location of fresh air out let to avoid infection . Design for ease of maintainability Unless you provide more details it is difficult to arrive the exact and correct load.

I believe the theater room is an isolated space located above an operating room equipped with a surrounding glass windows, serving as part of the main O.R room ceiling. The room is used for procedure, training and instructional type viewing purposes. The construction is similar to a built-in mezzanine floor surrounded with glass windows that are part of the ceiling placed directly above the O.R. or procedure table. Isolation precautions, such as HEPA filterings, etc., are not necessary nor required for this amphitheater-like type of rooms in the hospital. Air-conditioning and ventilation requirement for such rooms are very much different, separate and totally independent from the whole operating room ventilation systems.
