How to Design a Fixture for Gas Balancer on Tailgate of Passenger Car?

07/22/2010 6:24 AM

Hello all,

I am just starting my career in design and got 1st ever problem to solve.

I need to find an innovative design for vibration test fixture for gas balancer of tailgate of passenger car. My idea is to put the tailgate horizontally and take vibration test in 2 axis of plane. and then rotate test bed by 90 degrees and take test in remaining third axis.

For that I am projecting hinge point on the line of gas balancer fixing points to BIW. And then rotating the tailgate for keeping the angle between gas balancer and tailgate constant.

But I am confused about locating the point of hinge and gas balancers attachment to BIW on one line.

Please help me. You can suggest different ideas also. Thanks.

Use a spring, it will be more reliable.
Gas springs are great when new, but not so clever on a cold day 5years down the line when the tailgate drops on your head.

Look for a design thats 30 - 40 years old and still works then copy it with only a slight change in materials.

I hate that so much new stuff has an expensive and innovative ways of doing something simple which inevitably causes it to break right away.

Copy the old things that work and then leave the design alone.
