Do you mean that they are cylindrical when seen from outside ?

A bit more clearity will get you more good technical answers !!

Pole mounted transformers are simply transformers sealed inside cylindrical cans filled with a dielectric oil or fluid. The fluid provides electrical insulation and helps dissipate internal heating. Photos and some details supplied here:

Because cubic is boring and any other polyhedron would be too difficult to mount?

Or how about this. A transformer is a wire would around a core. Notice the word round embedded in there. When wrapping things like wire around something, a round shape eventually ensues. Smaller transformers can still be made to look more cubic, but the larger they get, the more difficult that becomes, and why fight it?

Dear Sir,

There is no hard and fast rule that Tranformers shall be Cylindrical Shape. Infact EHV transformer main tank are rectangular in shape. You may refering to small LV Tranformers which may be cylindrical in shape.

However, Tranformers cores are normally cylindrical in shape.

Best Wishes,

N.Suresh
