Need some Help on Writing UT Procedure!!

07/23/2010 9:07 AM

I currently am at a new job, have been here for 3 Months and at my previous job I became a Level II in UT. We have just bought a UT machine and now I am writing our procedure so that we can use it on our CJP welds for our Trusses. I have started writing the Procedure but seem to be stuck, all I really need is a basic outline on how to write the procedure. Any help would be great..

Thank you,

Jon

Welcome to CR4. A little tip; You'll probably get a better response if you don't make us figure out your acronyms first.

Direct the writing toward the educational level of who will be operating the machine. Review the information that comes with the machine to see if you and others can understand it. the first page of your procedure should list, in bold print, the dangers, warnings and cautions that need to be heeded. The next page should list abbreviations used and their meanings, unless it is an abbreviation that is in common use at your facility. I would include the original technical material that comes with the machine, but I would separate it by sections and only include material that is necessary for the operator to know to do his job. Information such as troubleshooting, repair, maintenance if not performed by the operator, should be placed at the end of the procedure, or left out completely. These items, you may not want operators to perform on their own. This is about as basic as you can get.

Greetings, and ... "apologies-in-advance" for the (personal pet peeve) nit-pick, first ... but, there are earth-moving machines, tooling machines, etc. etc. ... and then there are highly sophisticated, high-precision measuring instruments, including the ultrasonic variety...

A simple google search will reveal numerous company's Procedures available for perusal, including THIS one, which can provide you an idea as to what sorts of information might-ought to be therein contained.

A Procedure should make Reference to any Standards that may apply ... and as such, you might do well to obtain a copy of the Annual Book of ASTM Standards (Section Three) Metals Test Methods and Analytical Procedures (Volume 03.03 Nondestructive Testing).

Review the Standards that apply to the testing of such weldments and insure that none of the (Standard) "basics" get overlooked.

Remember that your Procedure is not expected to be a "Training Manual". It is a document that affords guidance to the trained and certified technicians, to help insure that they don't neglect any of those easily forgotten details, which must be adhered-to in order to insure "Repeatable Results".

"PS" ~ Don't neglect to review ASTM's E-543-04 "Standard Practice for Agencies Performing Nondestructive Testing" as well ... it's in Vol 3.03 with all the other NDT Standards.

Wishing you the best ~
