Why shouldn't I take advantage of these e-mail offers for deeply cut software? What's the catch?

Targeted pricing

07/19/2005 9:04 AM

What you are getting is targeted pricing, it is basically a charge on laziness. The more units they sell the better, but the higher the price the better. It's not worth the time for some people to fill out the rebates or to snip the coupons, so they pay more. For the people who do snip coupons, they are more likly to buy a product that they perceived as a better value.

Make sure the vendor is reputable.

Otherwise you may be buying knockoff or time-bombed software with no recourse when it malfunctions.

The software is much more likely to be odd lots then to be malware. You are right though, this is a buyer beware type of situation.
