the welder performance qualification (WPQ) is always carried out as per WPS . the WPS is nothing but the welding procedure specification to carry out a specific job of fabrication with designated parameters and procedures. Usually the classification society which is responsible for the controlling of quality of particular job ( or the project )is nominated/recommended by the buyer of the job/project. Any surveyor or inspector of any classification society who is associated with is empowered to witness the test and certify the welder.

So, first you have to design a WPS as per the job demands, get it tested/ witnessed by the appropriate surveyor/ inspector and the outcome results should be recorded in PQR. if WPS , PQR approved you can go ahead with welder qualification tests.

hope this makes you understand the system.

OK ,we designed a wps and pqr and witness it qualified then why we need a welder test since the welder (identified)itself qualified who welded, by qualifying wps and the data recorded in pqr.
