Austenitic Stainless Steels

08/01/2010 4:12 PM

I am trying to look at potential causes of premature failure of a (Spirax Sarco) steam sparge nozzle. The process takes soap and 95% sulphuric acid, mixes them through a static mixer, then injects steam to heat the mixture. It seems that the sparge nozzle is corroding/eroding faster than normal. The process vessel is made from 2RK65 austenitic stainless steel, whilst the sparge nozzle is made from 316 austenitic stainless steel. The aggressive process transformation takes place at 270kPa and 100 deg C

Can there be any chance of a some type of galvanic cell causing the sparge nozzle to erode. Any other ideas.

Steam in this service is very noisy. A lot of that noise is caused by cavitation of steam bubbles. The cavitation enhances any corrosion and as the bubbles collapse onto surfaces they cause micro pitting. repetitions make the pits grow together.

Some bronzes resist better. You can also buy ceramic liners that resist pitting. You can also create a rubbery liner that is more tolerant of the cavitation.

Sparger makers know all this...ask them

Given 95% sulphuric acid and dilution using steam, it comes as a surprise that stainless steel , indeed any steel, is in use at all.

Check out the Cole Palmer materials compatibility database for some suitable alternative materials.
