Vibration Producing Device for Testing

08/03/2010 11:04 PM

Hi CR4,

I have some applications where there are vibration sensors with SCADA trending display and other applications where excessive vibrations trip drives.

I want to test these periodically by creating vibrations on the mounting pads in the field with a hand held device (electrically operated or air operated like a rattle gun). We can see the trend at the time of testing to prove the vib sensors' responsiveness and prove the trip effectiveness.

Are there any such hand held device to suit this purpose?

Thanks for your ideas, in advance.

Is it 10Hz or 10,000Hz.

Maybe hit it with a hammer?

Two types of devices:

For trips it is: AMOT VibroGuard, 4294A

For vibs monitoring/trending, it is : METRIX Model ST6917

I think it's full scale is 1"/sec.

Hitting with hammer will be also a good practical test! But our guys, might miss the mounting pad and land right plumb on the sensor itself!!!

Vibration sensor calibration devices are available from different vendors e.g Bentley Nevada provides vibration probe testers which are basically devices ( shakers ) in which the probes install and which are then activated to provide a measured amount of radial vibration. The probe and monitor are thus calibrated - and tested exactly on a routine basis. Check with your vibration probe vendor.

I have used a 1/2 sheet electric sander as a test unit. Just strap the sensor on to the pad with Velcro and turn the motor on.

Sorry, I forgot to sign in before posting a comment. The sander will also give the same frequency and amplitude every time you test a sensor. And it's cheap.
