Heat Treatment Furnace

08/05/2010 1:59 AM

I want to make an electrical heat treatment furnace in my workshop, heating room is 30cm*30cm*50cm, how can i calculate the proper dimension of heating coils (coil length, coil diameter, wire diameter)

note: single and three phases electrical power source are available, furnace temperature range up to 1400C

I would consider zigzag nichrome ribbon for this, rather than round elements. This will work only if the melting point of nichrome is safely above 1400°C, which I haven't checked yet.

Do you have some further information on how quickly you want to heat up the air in this furnace, along with the weight and composition of the other material you wish to heat?

Oops, I guess nichrome does not go that high.

The next thing I would try is a Web search on kilns or other high-temperature furnaces. Apparently there is some ceramic fiber technology that could work.

Or maybe a combustion process?

max. operating temp. will be 1200C, is that suitable for nichrome? i found that its melting point is arround 1400C

ooh, good, this link refers to some nichrome alloys are used at high temperatures

let's go back to the first question how can i calculate required dimensions (coil diameter and length, and wire diameter)

Will need what you are heating up, for what purpose, what rise in temp you are looking for; i.e. heat up to full temp in 1/2 hour or can you wait a couple of hours.

Let us know what and the weight of what you are heat treating as some products have adverse reactions to the heating elements, be them nickle chrome or Iron Chrome. It does cost more but rather try looking at Silicon Carbide elements or moly- d?
