Plastic Bearings in Ex-Proof Environment

03/02/2007 1:20 PM

Just wondering if Plastic polymer plain bearing (teflon or etc) are allowed to be used on Explosion hazard zone? I am thinking with the installation on the bearing to rotation part, there might be a static built up on the rotating element and have posibility to create spark upon contact on other grounded object. But wondering if it is true? Any body knowS?

Re: Plastic Bearings in Ex-Proof Environment. My experience with synthetic bearing material varies from gatke to accroseal. The problem is Heat ,the same as with a metal bearing. Check to make sure any synthetic material is compatible at RPM and load rating with out melting and any vapor in the atmosphere that could degrade the bearing material is not present. If proper lubrication is required what kind to use. I have had some success with accrolon material and grease lube supplied by accroSeal . One thing I learned, is synthetic drive coupling are not used in in oil refineries because in case of a fire the coupling would melt leaving the pump in operative. If your Motor is an Explosion proof Motor, which it should be, no problem, If it is not an explosion proof motor, an explosion proof motor can be purchased from several Electrical motor manufactures "bearing included."

Several forms of self lube bearings are electrically conductive, including metal and carbon filled PTFE, and bearings of the DU type (trade name of Glacier Garlock Bearings).

More important is the application, ie speed and load and PV If within the bearing limits, reliable safe operation may be expected.

I suggest that you down load a catalog from above supplier, and check for yourself whether your particular application falls within the operating range of a Du bearing as a starting point. A call to their engineering offices will achieve the same thing in less than 5 minutes.

If the motor has an "EX" certificate changing the bearings will negate certification. Any mishap after alteration will directly be the responsibility of the engineer that authorised the modification.
