Piezo vs Electric Relays

08/09/2010 4:48 AM

Has anyone done a recent comparison of piezo relays, versus electrical relays?

Looks like an opportunity to save substantial power, especially in the larger sizes, such as motor starters, etc.

Hi Guest,

You know that Relays have the same principles of operation regardless of whether they're electro-mechanical or electronic or designed to switch a signal or heavier loads(here it's called a contactor)..... but in case of "piezo relays", the contacts are operated mechanically by the piezoelectric effect as their names refer to.

hope this helps

Can you provide a picture? specially of the larger sizes?

The full stroke of the contacts is soooo reduced that they would be arcing at the opening of the same. And they couldn't be switching high voltages or DC loads, forget about hi-current loads or KV applications.
