Turbocharger - Rotate Turbine Wheel Using Air Blower

08/10/2010 2:18 AM

if in a turbocharger, u want to rotate the turbine wheel at 20,000 rpm using a air blower, what kind of blower will u use and how will u give the specification of the blower . what are the calculations involved ?

your data is not sufficient to calculate the specification of blower required.load acting in turbocharger is also a major parameter. u need to specify the hp of engine or the turbocharger shaft load

once i get those parameters, what are the calculations done ??

What does your textbook say? If this subject is in your homework, it must have been covered.

I vaguely recall from classes 35years ago (back at NDSU in Fargo, Doorman) that a turbine gets the energy from the mass flow, not so much from CFM.

What RPM does the 4.6 liter engine run to achieve a 20,000 RPM turbine speed?

Use the engine RPM times the volumetric efficiency of the engine to determine the mass flow through the engine.

Then convert the engine mass flow to CFM of air at standard conditions to get the blower requirements.

As a semi-scientific guess, I will say the blower will be around 1000 to 1500 CFM. Not sure about the SP required due to the pressure loss blowing the air through the turbine wheel. But that is what your experimentation is for!

Blower would be either a PD "Roots" blower, or a centrifugal high pressure blower (similar to the compresser part of a turbocharger, ironically!).

I'd use a blower that has pushrods.

????

What are the pushrods connected to? And why are they needed?

"I'd use a blower that has pushrods."

I'm kind of partial to the overhead cam style.

The trouble with that type of push rod is when they contact the scroll of the PD blower or the impeller of the cetrifugal fan, things tend to come to a screeching halt with lots of smoke dust debris and bits of fire.

Sounds like fun when its done with other peoples money!

I heart pushrods. A good ole smallblock is a beautiful thing.

My dad had a 64 pickup with a 327 on it, very fun to drive around.

However, as an air moving device, the small block engines have too many moving parts! And energy use is high, And they take up a lot of space for experimental use.

Of course who knows what the original poster is or was up too.
