Microwave Oven is Noisy

08/10/2010 5:03 AM

Can someone advised me as to what I should check?

My microwave oven's fuse blew up and I had it replaced but now after replacing it, this oven just make this huge deep noise and as a result I can't switch it on any longer.

I suspect transformer windings.

Please advise

These things are cheap enough these days. If in doubt, replace it.

If you don't want to spend the money for a new one buy one 2nd hand.

Very high voltage is inside. If it is in warranty, send it back. If not, give it to a HAM radio operator and buy a new one for yourself. You will both be happier.

Could be the power transformer or another common failure is the magnetron. Either way, unless this a very expensive m/w oven, replace it as the cost of repair will be as much or more as a new one.

Yeah, I thought so. I just suspected that perhaps some of the the transformer windings have been broken or cut due to high voltage just before the fuse blow up.

I would love to replace/repair the transformer myself but I needed a clearer direction, just for the sake of exploring more and to satisfy my curiosity.

It is a stand-alone LG Grill microwave oven.

Very high and lethal voltages developed inside and there are also caps that store that energy.

I used to service these before I started college. Can be done, but getting parts is not like it was years ago. In fact, you may not be able to get parts,

You didn't say if this was a stand-alone unit that sits on the counter, or whether it is a built-in unit above a kitchen range.

The reason I'm asking is I have a built-in unit, which made a horrible racket last year when a 1/4-inch diameter steel pin landed on top on the unit after falling through a hole in the cabinet above the unit. I was cleaning-out the cabinet and discovered a pin [alignment pin?] left behind by the installer. As I lifted the pin, it slipped through the hole. Next time I turned on the microwave, the pin wildly vibrated due to the magnetron. I had to loosen the mounting bolts enough to lower the unit so I could remove the pin.

I have repaired many of this type of thing-BUT one has to know how to check components & also safety precautions to be taken & also have the testers needed- my feeling is you don't have the necessary requirements- if you did you would not have to ask here- the fact the fuse blew(how? burnt inside or clean? or a ceramic? or the high voltage fuse?)- fuses blow for a reason- usually over current being drawn- yes it is possible magnetron is s/c- or tx-or hv diode- we can't tell you without looking at the thing!. Please educate yourself a lot more on the subject.

You might as well pour water into your laptop as a grandchild did for mine. It now operates faster than light!

recycling the scrap should recoup your outlay less shipping.

I am fairly sure it is the transformer which has faulty windings.

To test make sure your high voltage capacitor is discharged by shorting out its terminals with a good insulated screwdriver. remove the high voltage connection from the transformer. Switch on the microwave and it still makes a huge noise [your words] then the transformer is kaput.l

"To test make sure your high voltage capacitor is discharged by shorting out its terminals with a good insulated screwdriver."

HUGELY bad idea!

The energy in that cap can and will melt any tool that contacts it sending tiny molten balls of steel.

Caps do not fare well when discharge in such a fashion.

Use a bleeder resistor and double check with a voltmeter.

On all the microwave ovens that I have worked on have self discharged the capacitor to virtually zero by its own internal bleeder resistor, this is just a security to make sure it is zero. Hopefully the covers will not be removed whilst energised especially if it is making noises, also which if left switched on for any length of time I would expect the fuse would blow again.

But the point is worth mentioning, the problem is one tends to forget that OPs are not possibly familiar with all things electric. It is difficult to cover all the the scenarios in a brief reply that could lead to dangerous situations so unless I live on this computer 24/7 I would not have the time to detail every thing.
